American physicians for the first time in history began to enter patients into suspended animation

Many living beings are able to fall under unfavourable conditions in a state close to death, but she is not. The breathing, heartbeat and other vital processes are slowed down so that they can be detected only using special equipment. This state is called suspended animation. And a group of scientists from the United States began to apply artificial introduction of the people in this state in order to save their lives.

Suspended animation could save many lives

How to enter a person in suspended animation

Not so long ago in the USA has passed test new, innovative technology that rapidly cools the patients with serious injuries in order to win more time for the operation. Doctors at the University of Maryland in Baltimore for the first time took the people in a state of suspended animation, which, according to The Guardian, reported on a recent Symposium held by the new York Academy of Sciences.

The process involves rapid cooling of the brain to a temperature less than 10 degrees Celsius by replacing the patient’s blood ice-cold saline solution. Usually the solution is pumped directly into the aorta, the main artery that carries blood from the heart to other parts of the body. Officially known as “emergency preservation and resuscitation”, this procedure will be tested on people who receive such catastrophic injuries that they were threatened with deadly bleeding, and people who suffered from a serious heart attack and can’t just be delivered promptly to a medical facility.

Patients who are often victims of stab wounds, shootings or extensive infarcts usually have less than 5% chance of survival, said in an interview one of the authors Dr. Samuel Tisherman at the University of Maryland in Baltimore. At least one patient has already undergone this procedure.

Rapid cooling of victims designed to reduce brain activity to almost a complete stop and slow down the physiology of the patient. This is enough in order to give surgeons a precious tens of minutes to perform the surgery. One of the goals of American studies is the reduction of brain damage common to patients with severe trauma related blood loss, or damage to internal organs. However, one of the complications of this procedure is that cells of the patients can be damaged as they warm up after surgery with the aim of removing from the state of suspended animation. In the course of further experiments will be mapped to the results of the 20 men and women, some of whom will receive standard emergency care, and some will be lost in a state of suspended animation. The test should pass before the end of the year, but the findings are expected only in 2020.

It is worth noting that the new technology differs radically from the usual anesthesia and the artificial coma. The fact that the last two manipulations are carried out, usually with the help of drugs. Of course, there are ways of introduction into an artificial coma by means of cooling, but this is, so to speak, “General cooling” of the body from the outside, not through the introduction of frozen plasma, which made the American scientists.

Scientists have touched on the topic of interstellar travel, because suspended animation is almost a perfect “candidate” to load it astronauts on the flight. Specialists NASA, however, argue that full hibernation for interstellar travel is still a distant prospect. US space Agency instead explores ways of immersing the astronauts to sleep and not freeze, thus also slowing down their metabolism.
