Presenting your attention the 198th edition of our weekly project “Android news”! Today we talk about the new encryption from Google, a hidden camera in the stylus new Galaxy Note and more.
Encryption does not happen much
Google has developed a new data encryption standard, which was called Adiantum. The representatives of the company wrote in a blog post. The latest development is designed to protect information on low-powered devices running Android, the hardware-based processor which is ARM Cortex-A7. Their performance is not enough to encrypt data with AES, but because the owners of such devices have not adequately protected from potential attacks committed from outside.
By and large, Adiantum designed for devices of the category “smart house”, as well as gadgets relating to the “Internet of things”. Due to the low power processors that make up their hardware base, they can’t use data encryption and, therefore, subjected to their owners of the danger of hacking. However, developers do not have to limit the scope of the new standard encryption and distributed its action including smartphones.
According to the developers, the encryption algorithms AES-256 on low-end devices is so slow that leads to the deterioration of the General perception of the tool and the underlying software platform. To prevent this and at the same time to protect users from unauthorized entry by third parties, it was decided to implement a completely new encryption standard, which requires fewer resources and takes less time.
Adiantum will be part of Android with the release of the tenth iteration of the operating system, which will be called Q. Its Android release will take place in may 2019 at the conference Google I/O. the Beta version of the update will be released a few months before final Assembly. According to tradition, it should be available to program participants pre-testing in late February – early March. During this time peroidically will find most of the bugs and flaws, allowing Google to produce the highest debugged OS.
A picture that will hack your smartphone
Photos and pictures downloaded from the Internet can cause hacking even the most advanced smartphones running Android, equipped with the most advanced means of protection. It follows from the materials of the blog Google developers. The publication says that the cause is a vulnerability in the codec that is responsible for processing images in PNG format. They can be used by hackers to execute on devices of the victims of arbitrary code.
According to the report, the threat of infection affected all devices running Android Nougat 7 and newer. The fix for the issue is only contained in the February security update, the dissemination of which, the search giant started earlier this week. He can set the owners of smartphones Pixel, Essential Phone and some models of Samsung Galaxy. Release dates update for all other devices depends on the efficiency of their manufacturers, who often are not in a hurry to take the adaptation.
Considering how many devices are in potential danger, Google prefers not to disclose details of any vulnerabilities found. Thus the company tries to protect users from hacking. “The most serious vulnerability [of discovered in the current build of Android OS], allows attackers via specially configured PNG file to execute arbitrary code in the context of a privileged process on the affected devices,” reads the official statement from Google.
If your smartphone still has not received the February security updates, it is strongly recommended with special care to ensure that any images you upload to your device. And since many of the resources have a built-in mechanism for the startup files, which could trigger the download of malicious component on the vulnerable device, it is necessary to consider this as well when navigating through unfamiliar web sites.
Another way to get rid of frontally
Without a doubt, sooner or later we will wait for the moment when our smartphones will be completely frameless. Without any assumptions in the form of different “notches” at the top. But it is possible that this time will come much sooner than you can imagine, it’s not so long ago, the network got the information that the patent and trademark office for more than a year has in its possession a document, which describes technology that will disappear any need to allocate space for the selfie camera.
It is actually much easier and more logical than it might seem at first glance. Even since the original Galaxy Note Samsung has started to develop its “not quite” stylus called the S Pen. In 9 Galaxy Note S Pen connects to the phone using Bluetooth and you can use it remotely to give the device a series of commands. So, it seems Samsung is ready to further improve S Pen, “resettling” selfie-camera.
In Samsung patent refers to the fact that smartphones usually use the digital zoom to reduce the thickness of the device, despite the fact that optical zoom offers the best picture quality. The patent describes a method of embedding an optical sensor in the S Pen. The device will have, among other things also lens. To take pictures will be using a special button.
On the one hand, the idea of expanding the functionality of the accessory to activate the camera may seem unnecessary. On the other hand, such an approach will allow to get rid of any additional items on the screen by increasing the working space. Now there are 3 solutions for a selfie-camera: “fringe”, “the hole in the screen” and retractable camera. Samsung also offers something new, completely release the front panel from the “extra” design elements. While Samsung’s patent also mentions the possibility of placing the S Pen in laptops.
