Google in may this year at its I/O conference introduced a new version of the Android operating system Pie, the system began to work faster and got a number of interesting features. However, the main problem is Google still not able to get rid of. We are talking about fragmentation. On October 26 the official Google has published statistics on the distribution of Android versions. Let’s look at it and analyze.
In the notes to the schedule of Google noted that it is not included in the list of the Android version that occupy less than 0.1% of the market. As you can see, the list is still missing the Android Pie. Six months have passed since when the company has officially revealed the first update, the system still installed in less than 0.1% of smartphones. Moreover, only 75% of smartphone users Pixel already installed this update.
But not even that interesting. Android Oreo, which was introduced in 2017, is only 21.5% of the market. It is ahead of Nougat with a score of 28.2 per cent. That is, the system of 2016 is the most common on the market.
A few days ago in the Network appeared the information that Google has moved to a new contract, according to which the producers are obliged to release security updates for Android smartphones within two years from the date of their release to the market. However, this is just shameful. Firstly, security updates, this is complete nonsense, with the vulnerabilities that are corrected in the system, most users will never encounter. I would say more, even a Macbook 2009, still receives security updates from Apple despite the fact that he was nearly 10 years. Against this background, 2 years is just a ridiculous figure for such updates.
And I have not touched on the topic of updates. Manufacturers think it’s normal to upgrade in 1-2 two years. Thus, the flagships for all time of existence on the market get only 1-2 major updates. This is the main reason for the fragmentation of Android. For some reason, Google does not oblige you to upgrade smartphones in the next 4-5 years, as it does, for example, Apple.
Thus, the main problem of Android fragmentation is not manufacturers. Blame Google. Even Treble Project, which is actively used by the developers of the custom firmware until now manufacturers sidestep. It’s been a few months since the release of the Android Pie, but why even Treble does not help the more rapid dissemination?
In this regard, buying some Huawei Mate 20 for 80 thousand rubles, the user begins to feel all the indifference to his unit a year later. Why, then, Italian authorities fined Apple for the slowdown in smartphones when Android manufacturers do not even try to update their devices. Isn’t this hypocrisy?
