The European space Agency ESA is preparing a new generation of astronauts for the next manned space missions to the moon. Recently, they began to teach the use of research tools, being dressed in heavy space suits restrict movement. But what about low gravity? In order to effectively use the equipment, the astronauts should learn to move in a new environment and, most importantly, to protect themselves from the consequences of staying in them.
To learn how low gravity of the moon can affect a body of people trying employee of ESA David green and engineer Tobias Weber. To do this, they built a vertical treadmill, which subjects the astronauts to run, being suspended in a horizontal condition. Studying their health records, the researchers intend to identify in advance possible problems and to develop ways to address them.
What happens to the body in low gravity:
- lost bone mass;
- weaken muscles;
- there are problems with the lungs and heart;
- altered taste perception;
- weakens the immune system.
As can be seen, stay in low gravity is bad for bone health. The best way to maintain their health according to scientists — to move, namely, jump. Unfortunately, the current simulator does not allow you to make big leaps, so the Agency intends to apply to NASA to continue research on the ARGOS system.
In the future, ESA plans to build a private trainer level NASA. So the Agency will be able to carefully prepare their astronauts for the lunar missions. The date when the simulator is put into operation, not yet known, but he already has a name — Luna 2.
