One of the most interesting features demonstrated by Apple during the WWDC 2020, has become a function of the CarKey. This is a digital access key that is stored in your account and allows you to open, close and start a support vehicle. Feature became available to owners of iPhone and Apple Watch that have already installed iOS updates 13.6 watchOS and 6.2.8, respectively.
The first company that implemented the CarKey in their cars was the BMW. All the models 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, X5, X6, X7, X5M, X6M, and Z4 produced after 1 July 2020 support this function.
Access to the digital key CarKey is available in the Wallet app. Users can share the key with friends or family simply by sending them via iMessage CarKey. The car owner can also create personal profiles with different access levels, so that children, for example, are unable to start the car without an adult.
To use digital key, simply attach your iPhone or Apple Watch to a car door. Then smartphone should be placed on a Qi-charging and you can press the ignition button to start the car. Interestingly, the system will work even if your smartphone is low. All thanks to the small reserve battery that allows you to function CarKey another 5 hours after turning off the iPhone. If you suddenly lost smartphone digital keys you can block via your iCloud account.
Unfortunately, there is no information when other automakers plan to equip their vehicles with this feature.
