In March 2019, the company SpaceX successfully docked their spacecraft Dragon Crew to the International space station. In the future the company plans to conduct a manned mission, consisting of two astronauts, and therefore, conducts a thorough test of the rocket, hoping to identify and fix all important issues. The company tested the emergency engines SuperDraco and, apparently, a fault was found — the witnesses noticed that the on-site test is the smoke.
Representatives of SpaceX have confirmed that during testing of the engines really had the accident. Fire tests took place at Cape Canaveral in the United States — fortunately, in the result of emergency no one was hurt. It is noteworthy that the first part of the test went smoothly, but then there was something inexplicable — visitors to the beach near Cape Canaveral noticed orange smoke.
To find out the cause of the accident, the company SpaceX has teamed up with experts from the space Agency NASA. Apparently, the source of the smoke was a fire SuperDraco engine as oxidizer, it uses a nitrogen tetroxide, and the fuel is monomethylhydrazine, which ignite upon contact.
According to the Director of NASA’s Bridenstine, thanks to such tests they are able to identify problems until they cause serious damage. This time no one was hurt, but without this testing in the future due to not detected the problem could have been killed the astronauts.
It is noteworthy that the launch of manned spacecraft Crew Dragon can move on the the November 2019. The reasons for the transfer date can be read in our material.
