They affect the amino acid composition of proteins of an organism, specifically on tyrosine. When tyrosine is mutated, it “preprogrammed” cells at a more rapid energy production.
To support continued growth, the tumor cells change the way of producing energy and building proteins. We found that peroxynitrite, the potent oxidant produced by the cell, monitor metabolic changes that occur in tumor cells of the nervous system that supports their growth. We believe that there are specific proteins that acquire a new function, which they didn’t have before, and this new feature can control tumor growth.
While in normal, not affected tumor process tissues, peroxynitrite is not produced. Moreover, because of the peroxynitrite often affects healthy cells, which can lead to significant complications in the course of the disease.
This discovery gives us an excellent opportunity for the development of new therapeutic strategies in the treatment of cancer conditions. We just need to understand how you can slow down or even stop the production of peroxynitrite.
