In OS X Yosemite has been given a Markup tool to add annotations to PDF files and images. For example, you can make notes, add text or hint or even sign documents. Few know, but this tool can be used in some third-party applications.
Before you begin, you need to activate the layout.
How to do it?
- Go to “System settings”.
- Select the menu item “Extensions” and then “Actions”.
- It remains to set the checkbox to enable the “Markup”.

It must be an application that works with documents or images. For example, Word, Pages, TextEdit, Pixelmator, and so on.
After you hover the mouse pointer on the image, you should see a down arrow in the upper right corner. Click the arrow, and then select “Layout” from the pop-up menu.
