Given the fact that the Earth climate is in an emergency situation, as stated recently by 11 thousand scientists from 153 countries of the world, not only researchers, but also journalists looking for better ways of fighting global warming. In the course of the essay competition edition of The Economist called “open future” (Open Future Essay Competition 2019), it took part of the processing algorithm GPT-2, which was publicly presented in February a group of OpenAIinvolved in research and ethics of artificial intelligence in San Francisco. Algorithm asked the question: “How to deal with climate change.” And here’s what he said.
How artificial intelligence is going to solve the problem of global warming?
Despite the fact that the winner of the essay contest was announced in September, beating nearly 2400 applications from participants from more than 110 countries, the answer AI, though not was the winner, but it seems quite interesting. Essay AI kept within 400 words. During inspection, the judges announced what the essay was written by the algorithm. Answering the question of which fundamental economic and political changes, if any, necessary for an effective response to climate change, the algorithm proposed to construct a sustainable energy system that would be affordable and environmentally friendly. The basic premise of the essay is that the AI offers to transform the economy of the energy system by investing in available for all infrastructure. According to the algorithm, people are not fully aware of the implications of creating a new economic system, and therefore offers a detailed scenario in which humanity abandons fossil fuel and switches to a completely new and clean sources of energy. Then build a system that increases economic opportunities for workers. Thus, for the first time in history, the world can become energy independent, which allows all people in all global communities to work together and create a reliable economic system. Given the paradigm shift, maybe it’s time to think about what we can do differently. The algorithm does not exclude the possibility of creating an economy that produces enough energy to feed all people on the planet. That’s just how the AI said.
This is interesting: what else can an artificial intelligence?
In the long term fight against climate change , the algorithm offers a new way of doing business — energy efficiency. According to AI, a change of thinking about the economic and social context global warming may be a significant factor in reducing carbon emissions in the atmosphere of our planet. In his essay, the algorithm notes that the intergovernmental panel on climate change (IPCC) called for a tripartite approach to solving the problem of climate change, in which governments, rich and poor, seek to reduce emissions, while developing countries should also take steps to combat climate change. The report MGIC AI calls incomplete and proposes to explore further the question of how to respond to global warming.

And yet, according to the algorithm, it is necessary to solve the issue with growing populations on the planet — to feed such a large number of people use more and more land, which contributes to climate change. And climate change, in turn, leads to an increase in natural disasters and lack of resources. If the situation does not change, the AI paints a rather bleak picture: the rapid increase in the value of world wealth will reduce the amount of energy available for conservation and economic development, and, consequently, increase the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere. This will entail extreme weather conditions, strong and often violent conflict, and drought. This situation, in turn, will increase the risk of hunger and disease and other infectious diseases.
The global scale impacts of climate change will be strengthened. Essay of the algorithm ends with the following words: “we must accept this risk for the future of human civilization and act now to try to prevent it”.
What the judges said?
Several judges evaluated the essays using the same standards and time and hundreds of peer-reviewed them. They evaluated an essay written by AI as having no practical solution. The tone of the essay, according to experts, hypothetical and abstract. Also they are confused by the large number of rhetorical questions. The decision of the algorithm to create an “alternative economy” seemed unclear and not well understood. One of the judges and all said that essay the AI does not give a principled answer to the question, and not a single new idea, not a convincing argument and not particularly well written.
