How to stuff a very powerful processor into an ultrabook. Huawei MateBook 13 and MateBook 14 now available with Ryzen 4000H APU

In addition to the MateBook X model, Huawei today also released updated versions of the MateBook 13 and MateBook 14. The original models were released at the beginning of the year and are based on Intel processors. New items have switched to AMD APUs, and here everything is more interesting than one might think.

Let's start with the parameters.

MateBook 13 (2020):

  • Screen – 13 inches with a resolution of 2160 x 1440 pixels
  • Platform – Ryzen 5 4600H or Ryzen 7 4800H
  • RAM – 8 or 16 GB
  • SSD – 256 or 512 GB
  • Battery – 42 Wh with fast charging support
  • Dimensions – 286 x 211 x 14.9 mm with a weight of 1.3 kg

MateBook 14 (2020):

  • Screen – 14 inches with a resolution of 2160 x 1440 pixels
  • Platform – Ryzen 5 4600H or Ryzen 7 4800H
  • RAM – 8 or 16 GB
  • SSD – 256 or 512 GB
  • Battery – 56Wh with fast charging support
  • Dimensions – 307.5 x 223.8 x 15.9 mm with a weight of 1.49 kg

And some of you may already have noticed the main feature of these laptops. If I'm not mistaken, these are the first ultrabooks with high-performance Ryzen 4000H processors. What about cooling, the question is open, but there will definitely not be any problems with power. Especially in the case of the eight-core Ryzen 7 4800H, which also has a very, very good GPU.

As for the rest, I will note the optional touch screen, metal cases, Huawei Share function, fingerprints, 65-watt charging and cooling systems with a pair of fans. The younger model has USB-C, USB-A and a headphone jack, the older one has one more USB-A, as well as HDMI.

And now the second tasty thing is prices.

The MateBook 13 (16/512), depending on the CPU, costs $ 665 or $ 737, while the MateBook 14 with Ryzen 5 4600H is priced at $ 766. There is no version with Ryzen 7 4800H on Huawei's website yet.

In addition to being very cheap in absolute terms with such parameters and processors, the comparison with modifications on Intel adds spice. The same MateBook 13 on a base Core i5-10210U with 16 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage will cost $ 867! That is, the version on the energy-efficient, far from the most powerful quad-core Intel processor costs more than the version with the most powerful Ryzen 7 4800H with the same amount of memory. Moreover, it is more expensive by $ 100. It is worth mentioning here that the modification with Intel has a discrete video card GeForce MX250, so in terms of GPU, the modifications are about parity. But the processor part of the Ryzen 7 4800H is a cut higher. So much for AMD's strength. However, I repeat, the issue of heating and autonomy remains open.

It is a pity that if these notebooks will reach our market, then, firstly, not soon, and secondly, probably at significantly higher prices.
