Experiment with the abandonment of transparency was considered a success. The pursuit of beauty in users of Macs, as it turned out, was somewhat exaggerated. Other features Macs (ease of use, etc.) was more important. Could just ask. This time to gather journalists and experts did not. Moreover, about the update not even issued a press release. Just, one day, in the 133-th anniversary of Lenin, in the Apple online store options iBook (Late 2002) was replaced by the iBook (Early 2003).
It happened in the night from 21 to 22 April 2003 time-Western coast of the United States. That we were made on April 22 to come to school in white shirts, and many of you of that pleasure was denied, and date of birth of Lenin don’t know.
Those who did not have habit to look in the morning in the online store, and never knew about it.
The reasons for this attitude… more or less understandable. The main news (all options are white, opaque, frustratingly conventional in appearance) of special importance are not represented. Moreover, it turns out all three generation iBook G3 “aerospace” PowerPC 750fx was designed wholesale by the beginning of 2002, and the only question that remained open at the beginning of 2003 – type of plastic – is not required neither Abraham nor creative efforts.
The group “household portable computers” have long worked on a more interesting project, it was close to completion and entered into the hectic stage. Test, testing, debugging.
In addition, on April 28 of the same year was appointed the announcement of the new iPod models, 3-th, where Apple first thought of the inhabitants of the “dark side” (Windows), where Firewire never really caught on. But more about that some other time. Everyone was very busy.
This is the ninth part of a series about the iBook, and the latest about the iBook G3. A list of previous parts is given below:
First: Laptop candy style: iBook
Second: iBook: “something else”
Third: the World of Steve jobs iBook
Fourth: iBook G3 (Mid 2001): give a steer to designers?
Fifth: iBook G3 (Late 2001): Include in the kit a screwdriver…
Sixth: iBook’and move to Mac OS X
Seventh: iBook G3: “icicle” in the Sands of the Sahara
Eighth: iBook G3, all in white…
iBook G3 (Early 2003)
Total code name of the latest model iBook G3 – Pipeline (Pipeline). 12-inch variants of the code name was Р72С, 14-inch P73C.
The first of April 2003, the network appeared the image of a bowl with Apple’s logo, it was like a new project that the company worked in their usual way. And she had a code name: Pipeline (P72WC and P73WC), depending on size.
Such a coincidence could not be accidental, and until the completion of the project has within it code names secret. Someone joked over the security service of Apple, the fate of the Joker (and his name) remained unknown. Could it be…?
All three versions were equipped with video card ATI Mobility Radeon 7500 (2xAGP) with the same amount of video memory is 32 Megabytes.
They were supplied with two pre-installed operating systems, Mac OS 9.2.2 and Mac OS 10.2.4.
The rest of the options last model of the iBook G3 were not different from the last.
The same communication ports, the slot for the installation of the AirPort (which can be purchased in the designer configurations in the online store for $ 99), in the case of the same two antennas for the AirPort.
iBook G3 (Early 2003) — options
In a budget option, according to tradition, was 24x speed CD-ROM. The drive is 30 Gigabytes, 128 Megabytes of RAM on the motherboard, the processor with a clock frequency of 800 MHz. And even in tests Geekbench 2 it scored the same as “expensive” options Late 2002 – 379 points.
It cost $ 999.
12-inch version with a clock frequency of the processor 900 MHz (PowerPC 750fx) equipped with a 8x Combo drive hard disk 40 GB, gained 442 points in the Geekbench 2 tests, and 1 was worth $ 299.
8x Combo drive may require decoding. It is 8X/24X/10X/24X DVD-ROM/CD-RW.
The 14-inch version was different from the 12-inch variant with a clock frequency of 900 MHz, but the size of the included memory, it was 256. It was offered 1 for $ 499 (compared to Late 2002, at 100 MHz increased clock speed of its processor, and 100 $ did the price drop).
The Mojave in 2003
In 2002, IBM released the PowerPC 750gx (Gobi), with a maximum clock frequency of 1.1 GHz. The processor was great, superior to “aerospace” PowerPC 750fx all the important and unimportant parameters… for Example, if a clock frequency of 900 MHz under a “normal load,” he ate and disseminated in the form of heat 9 Watts. PowerPC 750fx, in the same conditions – only 6 Watts.
Apple representatives with interest and watched a presentation, took a sample and thinking… a couple of weeks, reported that “not taking”.
IBM has not calmed down: in 2003, she introduced the PowerPC 750vx (Mojave), with clock frequencies from 1.5 to 1.8 GHz, supports clock frequency of the front bus up to 400 MHz, and even with AltiVec (vector calculations), the same AltiVec for the G5.
IBM could start production of the PowerPC 750vx in December 2003, and in 2004 – PowerPC 750vxe to increase the clock frequency to 2.0 GHz.
Apple said the transition to G4. The release of the PowerPC 750vx was cancelled, it never was released.
Continuation (a new series about iBook G4) it follows
