Advertising pursues us everywhere: in Newspapers, on the streets, in TV, the Internet and even within virtual reality. It seems that very soon we will see ads even in the night sky — it is this technology intends to launch a Russian company StartRocket. She wants to deploy satellites orbiting the earth with reflective sails, which will be produced advertising slogans. It is easy to guess that in the world there was a bunch of opponents of this idea, and most of all outraged by the astronomers.
Orbital is scheduled to be deployed at the altitude of 400-500 kilometres each reflective satellite of diameter 10 meters will play a role of a pixel that makes up the text or drawing. Since the brightness of an image area of 50 sq km will be directly affected from the sun, is to be seen only at dawn and dusk — the company intends to show 2-4 ads per day. Advertising that will be seen by millions of people, will cost the truly cosmic sum of 600 thousand dollars for one show.
The satellites will be about the same Shine as the Moon. Astronomers fear that this will prevent them to carry out research using ground-based telescopes. For example, their concerns were shared by the astronomer John Barentin:
Each of these moving glare on the night sky is something that can prevent us to collect photons from astronomical sources.
If the space the ads take root, scientists will be forced to use orbiting satellites. They will be too much, which will greatly increase the risk of collision. Subsequently on the Earth’s orbit will be more debris, and so much so that scholars from China, offering to destroy it with lasers.
Review of the founder StartRocket
Edition Hi-News contacted the founder of a startup by Vladilen Sitnikov and learned how he relates to criticism from astronomers. He is sure that they will not interfere with research, and gave several arguments. First, the orbital ad will appear for 6 minutes, during this time, astronomers will be able to relax and drink coffee. Second, research is usually conducted in remote areas, whereas the satellites would be only over populous cities. Third, monitoring is conducted on specific parts of the sky, and the likelihood that there will be advertising, very small. In any case, the company will be able to remotely close the reflectors in the face of complaints.
Observations occur in remote areas, the likelihood that we will over the Observatory is negligible — there are no people, there is no one to show our message. We only get attached to large settlements, where the astronomers work.
The businessman also recalled the project Elon musk for creating satellite Internet Starlink, involving 12 000 inexpensive satellites:
Thousands of satellites SpaceX to create a new Telecom operator — don’t confuse astronomers?
It is noteworthy that StartRocket is not the first start-up, intending to leave the orbit of the unusual device. In October 2018, researchers from China proposed to send into space an artificial moon, which at night will illuminate the streets of Chengdu. It is believed that the satellite will reduce the cost of electricity. Technology will be tested in 2020.
As for StartRocket, she has no investors and the company is engaged in their search. In October, she intends to create and prepare the satellites to the test run in January 2021.
