iPhone OS 4…

This press conference is “by invitation only” was held on April 8, 2010 in Cupertino at Infinite Loop 4. At the conference, the guests were presented the next version of the mobile operating system company, promising to release it in the summer of… Published 8 April 2010 Developer Preview of the new operating system and its SDK, exclusively for officially registered developers, it was called iPhone OS 4 Beta. After that, at intervals of about 2 weeks, got three more beta versions, and they are all called iPhone OS 4 Beta X, where X is a number from 2 to 4. On 7 June the system was renamed to iOS, and two weeks later, on June 21, iOS 4.0 is officially released.

It means that the operating system was still. Here’s the picture invitations:

In most companies, the system has long been called the word of three letters. Steve tried to keep the law, and was called the iPhone OS 4, but even he once stated. The other apparently was not able to overcome themselves. Words of three letters are invincible.

One of these days between 8 April and 7 June 2010 (exact date unknown) Apple and Cisco have signed an agreement. Apple received a license to use the trademarks iOS, the rights to which are owned by Cisco to refer to its mobile operating system. The rights to the trademark “iOS” is still owned by Cisco, Apple uses it under license…

Butterflies in the stomach…

There is a saying in English – “butterflies in the stomach”, it indicates a strong concern. IPad sales began on 3 April 2010, at 9:00 local time throughout the United States. Months of effort and without weekends over. From those who created the iPad nothing more dependent.

Voltage and Abraham came from logistics services and the engineers and managers this was the most difficult and endless period of life: and suddenly they will come and buy? Or even worse – buy it, but some of the resolved problems iPad suddenly come back (it happens), or manifest something else horrible and unpleasant, unnoticed by developers and testers?

It’s time those “butterflies in the stomach”. But… 300,000 iPads purchased in the first 24 hours. April 8, at 10 a.m. Pacific time, five days from the start of sales, they’ve sold 650 000. The problem was, but the other: not enough iPads. The sales were a surprise to Apple, no one expected such a rush. That never happens…

By iPads was not a problem, just isolated cases – and here is the press conference, the next following turning the wheel of history – this is me without a trace of irony.

Reviewing video of the press conference, I noticed something that had escaped my attention in 2010: Apple devices were still leaders in the Internet, the network was 64%. Less than before – but more still. But second place, with 19%, took Android, which six months ago were almost not visible. A strong competitor, and share it grew rapidly. Like a cancerous tumor.

Here’s the video: (duration – 00:59:48)

In the information to the video incorrect date (press conference was held on April 8 instead of 11), and the system is called iOS 4. But the quality of video decent.

iPhone OS 4

In the new version, as usual, was more than 1,500 new APIs and over 100 new features to the standard user level.

At a press conference said, only seven new major innovations of the hundred, only Scalzi mentioning some others. Of course what he told was more interesting other innovations, but now was eager to know what they concealed. Marketing!

About multitasking from Apple below. The remaining six innovation was interesting and important – but none of them was perceived so differently, and does not cause much controversy.

Folder. The idea is simple, and the need for it is long overdue – iPhone OS 3.x limit the number of installed applications: they could not be more 180. More than 11 pages of home screen does not fit.

And users got a taste of the App Store, and got a taste. To increase the number of pages was easy, but 11 pages was too much. Folders with up to 9 apps in a closed form takes the place of a single application. If you want, now you can set more than two thousand applications… or place the existing one hundred and fifty to two or three screens.

In my opinion, the implementation work with folders in iOS one of the masterpieces of Apple. Simple, logical and uncluttered. Remember the first time.

Improvements in the email client (not a “by basin”), iBooks for iPhone and iPod touch is largely the same (the program is “she”?), as on the iPad. Game Center is a witty social network for games and entertainment, the most fun of all the social networks I’ve seen.

Lots of improvements for enterprise users – with a special license for large organizations who had the right to their own corporate App Store. Cool.

And iAd. The idea somehow didn’t go – which is a pity. 85 million iPhone and iPod touch, and a good program users sit for hours. Adding support to your app iAd. And concerns about the content and consideration of their views takes on Apple, it also pays 60% of the profits – the Creator of the application for allocating advertising space.

Popular applications would generate decent advertising revenue, free apps would remain free, their authors would buy more Macs and other Apple device – if you want to, of course.

If the rollers of these advertisers were just as fascinating as the examples of advertising media from engineers and marketers Apple shown on 8 April…

Multitasking

On the evening of 8 April, many media reported that at a press conference in Cupertino Apple has announced the introduction of multitasking in the next version of iPhone OS. Quoted from Steve: “as with Copy-Paste, we did not seek to be first, we wanted to be the first one to do it (multitasking) as it should.”

“Apple is unable to implement a simple and regular multitasking, what a shame!” is a summary quote from numerous media outlets of the time. And then – done?

No. Multi-tasking was impossible to implement in the iPhone OS: its support was in the system from the beginning. On several levels. And used, the system worked for several processes, without which she would be unable to perform its basic tasks.

To use multitasking in the app was a no-brainer: the mechanisms for this there were several, one after the other. It was banned for what was a serious and valid reasons. The app is designed for illegal distribution channels multitasking was used with ease – with the expected consequences.

iPhone OS was with inhuman thoroughness is balanced, otherwise it just wouldn’t work. The battery charge would disappear in minutes, the device was heated and his entrails burnt out – while Apple engineers haven’t added in the complex system of early detection of overheating, forcing a shutdown of the device as a last measure of protection.

The theme would be more correct to name “a simulated multi-tasking in applications with minimal or zero use of multi-tasking”. Correct, but not correct. Steve and Scott made no secret about it, just not focusing public attention on the issues which would plunge 9/10 present in hibernation.

The term “multitasking” can be understood in different ways. The user there are new features – quick switching between apps, saving apps of their condition… Strictly speaking, multitasking is almost not involved. When switching to another app, the system automatically recorded as current and stored it somewhere in memory and the app was frozen. That is, it was switched off – but in the list “background applications” appeared its icon at any time it can be brought back to life and continue from the same place.

Fast Application Switching was presented as the seventh service multitasking. The other six services are allowed limited set of tasks to execute in the background, under control of the system. Over time, the number of services grew, but the rules remained the same: the background execution of the task could be interrupted at any moment. Because of abuse of the task, but not only. The reason could be the deficiency of resources which is destroying the process had nothing.

Fast Application Switching was user interface “multitasking” in iPhone OS, and that he was the main innovation of the new system. And it was made “right.”

Starting with iPhone OS 4 Beta 3, this interface has a way to remove applications from the list. Even in the frozen state of the application took place in the permanent memory and a part operative to accelerate the process of “resurrection”. Since the set of functionalities has not been changed.

Criticisms were many, from the absolutely idiotic to quite reasonable.

Do not know which of them to include this: “the compatibility of the app with the multitasking demands of its completion by the developer” – and this, according to the quoted source, the nightmare and horror of the cross on all the benefits, and the like.

Truth in this observation were: for compatibility with Fast Application Switching and in fact had to be “processed.” To build for iPhone OS 4 (or iOS 4). And that’s all. To resolve the problem, starting from June 21 (day of release of iOS 4), the App Store took only applications capable of participating in Fast Application Switching. The Creator that was posted in the App Store until that day, had sent a warning: “until such a period of eliminate the incompatibility with the FAS, otherwise the application will be removed from the Store.”
