NASA is testing a system of landing “Mars-2020” in the Valley of Death

Space Agency NASA have been preparing for the mission “Mars-2020”, in which the eponymous spacecraft will reach the red planet and will land on the surface of the crater, Jezero. In early may, researchers successfully tested a heat shield to protect the unit from the hot air which occurs in the collision with the atmosphere. Now the Agency is testing the Lander Vision system (LVS), providing a safe descent to the surface due to the ability to explore the landscape of the area.

The venue of the test we chose Death Valley — intermountain basin in the state of California, which has a complex and diverse landscape. The Agency is extremely important to test the system on LVS in difficult terrain, so she could put the Rover in the most interesting from a scientific point of view the place without putting yourself at risk.

As a rule, landing of vessels is made “blindly”, based on the pre-loaded navigation instructions. Despite the fact that researchers choose in advance a safe zone without craters, boulders and cracks in the descent vehicles often there are unforeseen circumstances.

The LVS system is designed in order to avoid them. It includes a set of sensors that constantly sends to the onboard computer coordinate information of the apparatus, its speed and altitude. Built-in lidar studies of the area for the presence of dangerous places, and allows the unit to sit in the most secure place.

The system not only increases the chances of a successful landing, but also allows you to get into those places that are most interesting to scientists, but it was considered extremely dangerous. Moreover, with the shortage of fuel the unit will be able to choose a different place to land.

Nearby crater, Jezero researchers can discover the first extraterrestrial life. Around this object is a dried river Delta, where it can remain live microbes. Read more about the expectations of scientists can be read in our material.
