Researchers from the University of Sussex (UK), apparently, are fans of the film series “Star Wars.” But even if this were not so, they have created a device that’s very similar to the holographic interfaces that were used in “a Galaxy far far away”. New development using ultrasound is able to create 3D animated objects that can talk and interact with the observers.
How to create a hologram
During a demonstration of the operation of the device, the researchers showed a butterfly, flapping wings, countdown timer, written numbers hanging in the air, and the rotating Earth. In addition to interactive digital objects and animations, scientists want to use the interface for the new method of data visualization.
Although image similar to holography, the device is a holographic projector in the usual sense. Instead, it uses a three-dimensional field of ultrasonic waves. Scientists call their system is a multimodal display with an acoustic trap (display trap multimodal acoustic, MATD). Despite the rather interesting results (which you can see in the video, after finish reading the article until the end), the experts use a simple technology: the images are created between two horizontal plates, in which are embedded many-many small speakers.

The demonstrated experience been used 512 speakers, but their number can be changed both in smaller and in a big way. Because images are created in three-dimensional space, they can be viewed from any angle. And by careful control of the ultrasonic field, scientists can force objects to talk, or even make sounds. Or do it all with musical accompaniment.
