Scientists Listen Breakthrough project aimed at the search for extraterrestrial life, published the results of the first three years of their observations. Recall that the goal of the project, with a budget of $ 100 million, launched in 2015, investor Yuri Milner and the late theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking is the scanning of 1 million closest to us stars, as well as 100 neighboring galaxies located near the Milky Way.
As the portal Space.com scientists of the project to date, details scanned 1327 nearby stars (which is 80 percent of the total) for the presence of signals of extraterrestrial technology. In an official statement, scientists reported that it collected nearly 1 petabyte (1 million gigabytes) of digital data that is now freely available to the public.
Aliens have not yet found
“The publication of this dataset – a huge milestone for team Breakthrough Listen. We have cleaned thousands of hours of observations of nearby stars in billions of different frequencies. We didn’t find any traces of artificial signal, but this does not mean that there is no intelligent life: we could not look in the right place or looking deep enough to catch the right signal,” said lead author, an employee of Swinburne University of Technology and the University of California, Berkeley Danny Price.
Scientific Breakthrough Listen group from the University of California, Research center, SETI (all BSRC) at Berkeley has developed a number of methods of finding data on the “thesignature” testimony of technologies, which can be, for example, transmitters or power plant created civilizations beyond Earth. These methods include search power signals occupying a narrow range of radio frequencies, search bright lasers used for communication or movement, and the use of new algorithms based on methods of machine learning. Their scientists use to study astrophysical phenomena inexplicable in addition to finding thesignature.
To search for aliens, scientists use a radio telescope green Bank, located in West Virginia (USA) and telescope “parks” in Australia. Soon, they will connect to the project and other observatories.
The research results of the first three years of the project laid out in open access on the website and Breakthrough Listen on the website all BSRC. In the database total size of 1 petabyte also contains the results of observations of the first duplicate fast burst FRB 121102 and asteroid Omwamwi.
“Although we have previously reported on a smaller scale the results of their work, we are happy to announce that we are ready to provide free first full and a very large collection of data and the instructions by which anyone will be able to help us in the search for alien civilizations. And this is only the beginning, there is still a lot of work”, — said the chief system administrator of the Research center SETI to search for extraterrestrial civilizations Matt Lebofsky.
