In that time, about life on the red planet dream of, not only science fiction writers and filmmakers, scientists have not the most joyful news for future colonists. The fact that the results of a recent study published in the journal eNeuro, showed that cosmic radiation poses a much greater threat to health than previously thought. The study raises new challenges associated with the effects of receiving low doses of radiation for seven months. That is enough to require astronauts to fly from Earth to Mars.
How radiation damages the brain?
Using lab rats as test subjects, researchers found that “the realistic impact of low dose radiation causes serious neurocognitive complications associated with impaired neurotransmission”, including “reducing the excitability of hippocampal neurons and a violation of long-term potentiation in the hippocampus and cortex of the brain.” In other words, these neurological effects manifested themselves as a serious breach in the ability to learn and remember information. The researchers found that the rats showed signs that their ability to learn and retain information is significantly impaired. Furthermore, animals showed significant anxiety. In the end, space is not the best place where one can be during a panic attack.

The study’s authors believe that their work talks about significant adverse effects of space radiation on the brain and point to the increased risk associated with the upcoming NASA plans regarding traveling to Mars. Recall that in 2017, the President of the United States Donald trump is charged with delivering the first colonists to the Red planet by 2033. Shortly thereafter, NASA unveiled a multistep plan of deep space exploration and development of Mars. Moreover, experts stated that within the next 25 years on Mars will be the first people.
Obsession red planet
Perhaps, today, only lazy not heard anything about the plans for the conquest of our nearest neighbor in the Solar system. Notorious inventor and founder of SpaceX Elon Musk, is working hard to build a spacecraft that can travel to other planets a reality. Not so long ago we told you about a successful test of the Starhopperas well as the latest technical achievements of SpaceX. Anyway, NASA plans to cooperate with the Mask and judging by the latest statements are very serious.
Do you think will land the first Mars colonists in 2033 or cosmic radiation would be an unbearable problem? Share your opinion in the comments, as well as with members of our Telegram chat.
But not all share the optimism about future missions to other planets. American engineer and part-time science educator bill Nye criticized the talk about the colonization of the red planet, marking the total failure of the planet to support human, and likely any other life. “No one is going to stay on Mars to create a family and to raise a generation of Martians. It is simply unreasonable, because it is cold. And almost no water. On Mars there is absolutely no food, and most importantly, I just remind these guysthat there is nothing to breathe.”
Nye in solidarity with retired astronaut Chris Hadfield, who said that not only NASA has no funds to deliver people to Mars, but private space companies like Blue Origin and SpaceX.
Personally, I don’t think any of the existing rockets will take humans to Mars. Moreover, these trips are dangerous and take too much time… I think we’ll never go to Mars with the technology we have today.
However, despite the fact that the new issues raised by researchers, need to be better understood, enthusiasts and engineers is unlikely to abandon its plans for the exploration of the red planet. Likely to be developed new solutions, perhaps in the form of new fixtures or even neuroprotective supplements for protection against the harmful effects of radiation. In the end, today mankind has made incredible strides in many areas, so it is possible that Homo Sapiens will someday be to surf the cosmic expanse.
