Despite the fact that the famous HiFiMan in the top segment sometimes lose touch with reality, their ability to create a relatively affordable models still have them, and it gives us a very efficient model like Sundara.
Overall, “sundara” — a conventional isodynamic headphones without any MEGASYSTEM and super know-how. But, as usual, the devil is in the details, so in this case we have: a very thin, membrane tech, efficient design, combining adaptability with practicality, and quite adequate price, which at the time of this review approximately 500 dollars, that HiFiMan is almost budget segment.
- Emitters: isodynamic
- Acoustic design: open
- Frequency range: 6 Hz – 75 kHz
- Impedance: 37Ω
- Sensitivity: 94 dB
- Cable: replaceable with 3.5 mm TRS connectors
- Weight: 327 gr.
Packing and delivery
Following its good tradition HiFiMan Packed in two boxes. External — just the transport packaging made of ordinary cardboard, which protects the contents from various shocks, the long road. Inside is a second box with a restrained but quite stylish printing. Inside, positioned on a bed of tissue lie the headphones themselves. In addition you will receive the same wire, 6.3 mm adapter and instruction booklet.
Of course, I would like the package a little more, but for the full-size models such asceticism is often the norm.
Design and comfortable wearing
Look headphones gives the fact that the developers thought long and hard over how to make them more manufacturable, simplifying production and increasing reliability. To the credit of the engineers, they were able to achieve this without compromising the design.
Headband made of spring steel, it is upholstered in a soft leatherette and has a well designed clamp that provides a combination of secure fit and comfort.
Fork holders cups are made of aluminium and very durable and reliable. Unfortunately, the price for this was a decrease in the number of degrees of freedom for cups, now they rotate only around the longitudinal horizontal axis. In addition, the user can adjust the size of the headband, the adjustment process requires significant effort, since the mechanism is very tight, although it is even better.
Themselves cups — very thin, looking at them in profile, we can only wonder how HiFiMan placed it on the emitter and a magnetic system, however, their experience is not surprising. The outer side of the cups — fully acoustically transparent, allowing the improvement of an imaginary scene, but soundproofing 100% no. In General, Sundara is a model not for the street, and in the office-your colleagues are unlikely to be in awe of drying your library.
The cable is made detachable, and HiFiMan once again changed the connectors used on the connection uses a normal 3.5 mm plugs. According to developers, the nests in the cups, further strengthened in order to avoid “razbaltyvaniya”, but in this case they can only believe in the word. The bundled cord is quite normal, judging by the tactile sensations it uses the same air isolation like the HE-1000 to the second version. The cable is very convenient, however, for full-size headphones to make a bad wire — have to try.
Collected headphones are very good and I think with minimalism will be a long time. HiFiMan seems to know what has developed a convenient design of the headband, so have already announced several models with the same design.
To listen following equipment was used.
- Yulong DA9 and Resonessence Labs Concero HP in the role of DAC and amplifier
- Apple MacBook Pro Retina 2016 as the source
- Fidelia in the role of player
- Lotoo PAW Gold, theBit OPUS#2, Astell&Kern, A&ultima SP1000 and the role of other portable players
- Recording high-resolution Lossless-formats (Dr. Chesky have The Ultimate Headphone Demonstration Disc and others)
Before listening headphones were heated for 72 hours, changes in the sound were observed in the first 30 hours.
The overall tuning headphones made in controlstring manner, while other manufacturers are trying to make the headphones initial-middle segment with more “taste” serving, Sundara offers users a very neutral and smooth sound with an almost linear frequency response in the region below 1 kHz.
The bass is decorated in a typical isodynamic manner, it is not accented, it has good density and speed. He’s a bit “dry”, so fans pumping ground model may seem lightweight, but in fact there is enough bass, and with a good amp they show themselves and a great rumble and good depth. Control, of course, also on the level, bass knows its place and sticks to it.
MIDs performed in the same manner, they are neutral, fast, with little emphasis on micro-contrast. Headphones quite critical to the quality of the recording, as visibly demonstrated by the problems of the tracks, especially the compression. On the other hand, this is the model that we need wish to hear all the small nuances of the instruments and the nuances of vocals. The imaginary scene is not a record, but much more average in width and depth, which is perhaps expected for open neutral istinam. Plans are well divided, and the instruments have realistic sizes, but they are spread in the space a little wider than I should have.
Vernacularly range filled with detail and has a slight accent, so the model is definitely not for people sensitive to treble. Sundara generally have a slight slope towards the light, it is also necessary to consider when choosing. Headphones good play of attack and decay in verniciatura range, more simple characteristics of the type of permit and length — at a very good level. HF have a normal layering and separation, not so much as that of the top models, but much better in the budget segment, especially a closed headphone.
Comparison, I will not describe, as there is nothing comparable to Sundara I have is still there, and to write texts about “very different sound models” I don’t see much point.
I think even a simple look at the characteristics of the headphone makes it clear that they are not designed for “simple sources”, even the players for them to choose powerfully. However, of course, it is better to consider for Sundara something from the hospital, after all the model is definitely not for portable use.
Stylistically headphones are best for genres that offers good recording quality and great level of material. The musical direction, which is commonly written with strong compression and forced filtering in the HF range, reduce the advantages of this model. Therefore, the sensitivity to the quality of the recording is about 8 points out of 10.
Several traditional tracks for example
Bastille — Pompeii Sorry for the quite “pop” track, but it perfectly demonstrates the strengths of Sundara: tight bass, served without excessive dominance, dramatic volume and transfer all the nuances of the track emphasize the quality of the recording and all the interesting findings of the authors of the song.
Jimi Hendrix — Hey Joe Total classic of the genre, covered by an infinite number of times, but, of course, the Hendrix version is one of the most canonical, and therefore fall into this collection. Track recorded with spectacular vocals, and the heroes of today’s review with beautiful separation plans in depth this is particularly demonstrated.
Yo-Yo Ma — Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon Magnificent interpretation of folk soundtrack performed by the brilliant cellist. In addition to the General interest, the record is still very good quality, quiet, slow melody periodically complemented by the orchestra, favorably shades her. Headphones HiFiMan, in turn, do everything possible in order to convey the richness of this composition.
Neutral headphones that are configured to maximally uncolored sound are not frequent guests in the world of audio, which is logical in a world where demand determines supply. So rare guests in the midrange segment like Sundara’s not so common, but so interesting. However, before buying you should evaluate whether you need these headphones.
