After studying numerous photographs, scientists firmly believe that water has played a huge role in the history of Mars. Indeed, the surface of the red planet literally delineated waterways, and researchers from the University of Chicago believe that the river it was much wider, and the water flowed much more power than on Earth. While scientists are wondering how this could happen — the current view of ancient Mars suggests the rapid flow of water on its surface.
Scientists believe that even in ancient times Mars had a very weak atmosphere, so the planet could not provide an adequate greenhouse effect for the formation of a powerful flow of water. Also in those days, the Sun shone much weaker — brightness accounted for only 25-30% of the current share. Therefore, the researchers used to build that Mars has long been a relatively dry place with cold, and sometimes icy water.
The assumption that the red planet flowed wide and powerful river, was made after studying 200 channels of dried rivers. This is evidenced by many factors, such as the width of waterways, the steepness of the ravines and the size of pieces of gravel, once lying under flowing rivers.
Of course, the new discovery opens another new fact about ancient Mars, but also creates new questions. Main from them — what climate reigned on the planet billions of years ago, so that the water can flow with such great force? Scientists still have no answer because their knowledge about the past of Mars doesn’t fit the new opening.
