Scientists from Moscow Institute of physics and technology, together with colleagues from the USA and Switzerland have conducted experiments, which successfully made a quantum computer to return to a state of the past. Brief findings of a study which describes the possible manifestations of this effect, according to a press release published on the website Phys.org. Details of the study an international team of physicists presented in the journal Scientific Reports.
Opening of Russian scientists are unlikely to lead to the creation of a time machine, with which people can travel into the past. However, the team of physicists managed to split second to return a quantum computer by IBM in the state in which he had been a moment earlier. And even this result may be surprising implications for the future of computing, quantum physics and all our comprehension of time itself.
“This is one of a series of works devoted to the possibility to violate the second law of thermodynamics is a law of physics, closely related to the distinction between past and future. Now we come to the problem with a third party — we artificially create such a state system, which itself develops in reverse from the point of view of the second side,” says the study’s lead author Gordey Lesovik of the physics Laboratory of quantum information technology.
First, the researchers found, can an electron in empty space spontaneously return to a moment in the past. To evaluate the location of particles at a specific point in time they used the Schrodinger equation. The calculations were based on the fact that the position of the particle will gradually move through space, obeying the “time arrow”.
As it turned out, the electron really can be in the past: he returns to the state, which was moments ago. However, this should happen very rarely, and at the same time “rewinding” back will be only 0.06 nanoseconds.
To check the violation of the second law of thermodynamics in practice at the Argonne national laboratory (Illinois, USA), Temperate with colleagues from other academic institutions has allowed numerous experiments with a specially programmed quantum system based on two and three qubits.
First, the two qubit was in the ground state, denoted by 0, which corresponds to the localized electron. Then, place the evolution of the state, and a special program has changed the state of the computer so that he could go back in time, as occurs with the electron when fluctate microwave background. In other words, the values of the qubits has paramutabilis in the past.
Experiments have shown that the quantum system working on the basis of two qubits back to its original condition in 85 percent of cases. If the system uses a three qubit, the success of return was only 49 percent. This, as the researchers suggest, is due to errors in the work of the quantum computer and not some other, completely unexpected and inexplicable reasons.
As in the case of quantum teleportation, the results of this study should not be linked with the possibility to someday create a machine that will allow us to travel in time. The researchers believe that their work and insights in the first place will help to make quantum computing devices based on qubits is more accurate.
