Apple has no equal in the creation of truly useful solutions. Touch ID, Face ID, iMessage, AirDrop, they all in varying degrees, affected our experience of using equipment of the brand. After all, if you can protect your smartphone biometrics, why every time to enter a password? Or, say, if the manufacturer offers the possibility to use one universal app for sending and SMS and free messages using the Network, what is the point to move on to something else? About the same I think Apple’s competitors who try to imitate her, and sometimes – perhaps by accident – even surpass it.

AirDrop has long remained almost the only service for the rapid exchange of data. It was for a few seconds to upload multiple images and even heavy video. Apple special way to combine Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, resulting in quite high data transfer speed, catch up with you competitors to a certain point not even trying. Most likely, the reason was the limited potential of the technology, because in order to transfer data from one Android device to another, it was necessary to ensure their compatibility, in terms of competition with each other was almost impossible. However, Chinese brands Oppo, Vivo and Xiaomi was able to overcome the desire to compete and created, in fact, cross-branded analogue AirDrop, which, though not received special distribution, will now compete with a Quick Share from Samsung.
What to replace AirDrop for Android
The decision of Samsung in its execution is quite close to the AirDrop. Koreans did not use a cloud service to increase the range of the interface between the devices because this would have required an active connection to the Internet, which greatly limited the scope of the technology, and did the same thing and Apple. They combined Wi-Fi and Bluetooth and on their basis has created a proprietary data transmission technology called Quick Share that in rough translation means “rapid exchange”.

Despite the common nature with AirDrop, Quick Share works with only three smartphones: Galaxy S20, S20+ S20 and Ultra. Most likely, Samsung is simply not enough time to adapt the technology for earlier devices. As a result, even folding Flip Galaxy Z, which was released simultaneously with the Galaxy S20, but got last year’s processor, also left without support Quick Share. However, the company promises that in the near future this technology will be applied more widely, not announcing, however, the exact timing.
Quick Share better than AirDrop
Quick Share like and AirDrop does not require an Internet connection and a fairly long range. Samsung is not talking about a distance of running its technology, but given that it is based on Wi-Fi, we can assume that to establish a connection between devices, they can be located at a distance of several dozen meters from each other. Another thing is that Samsung managed to do what you failed to realize Apple. The engineers of the Korean company made it possible to send via Quick Share data for five devices, while AirDrop can simultaneously maintain a connection to only one recipient.

Whether it is from a practical point of view? Personally, I think Yes. Anyway, in my opinion, this feature is even more useful than the ability to select a recipient, simply aiming a smartphone at him. Moreover, it can only do iPhone owners with the support of technology Ultra Wideband, which is the same in many countries, including Russia, banned at the legislative level because of involvement in the range of 6 GHz. In our country, this standard belongs to the Ministry of defence, which is not yet ready to provide its civilian.
What can Quick Share
On the other hand, Quick Share at this stage of its development is very limited. If Apple, when they launched AirDrop and made it available in a fairly wide range of devices, Samsung considered that can afford to drag it out. However, in the future, given that the range of the Korean brand has not only mobile electronics, but also TVs and other gadgets, Quick Share can be quite decent and even superior alternative to AirDrop, but only within the Samsung ecosystem.
