According to a study by international team of scientists, based on mortality data, geographical place of residence has a significant impact on the probability of attainment of the centenary age. Of course, good genes play a lifetime role, but on their work, as you know, is affected by many environmental factors. The obtained results suggest that residents of the state of Washington (USA), living in comfortable for walking areas, are more likely to reach 100 years of age. The authors note that the work adds new evidence to the growing array of evidence that social and environmental factors make a significant contribution to longevity.
The house and life expectancy
Study of life expectancy by County allows scientists to track the geographical time differences and assess contributing factors. These differences are mainly associated with the combination of socio-economic, racial-ethnic, and behavioral factors and healthcare factors. During the work on the new study were examined provided information about the death of nearly 145 000 residents of Washington state at the age of 75 years and older in the period 2011-2015.
The data included information about age, place of residence at the time of death, field, race, education, and military service. In order to assign a score to different variables, taking into account the level of poverty, access to health care, quality products, clean air, etc., based on data on place of residence, was also used the results of a study of the Agency for environmental protection and other sources. Based on the obtained data, it was found that a comfortable environment, the ability to walk near the house, higher socio-economic status and a high percentage of the working age population in the area of residence is positively correlated with the achievement of 100 years of age.

As writes portal Science Daily, the study showed that living in areas with a mixed age population is beneficial for all. Comfortable environment, comfortable and convenient for walking areas make exercise more accessible to elderly and facilitate their access to medical care and grocery stores. The authors note that the areas inhabited by people of all age groups tend to contribute less in isolation and more community support of the elderly.
Further analysis showed that the geographical areas in which the probability of achieving a century old-high, located in districts of big cities and small towns with a high socio-economic status, including Seattle and Pullman.
The authors of a study published in the journal International Journal of Environmental Research believe that the more advanced conclusions will require additional research. At the same time, scientists hope that eventually their work will form the basis for the creation of more healthy communities, which will help to improve the length and quality of life of older people.

What is a “blue zone” of the planet?
For the first time, the geographical concept of “Blue” area (Blue zone) was described by the American Explorer Dan Buettner, in his article “Secrets of long life” in 2005, for National Geographic magazine. Today, the blue area is known as the areas with the highest rates of longevity in the world. In total there are five such zones, and they all share some common characteristics. The most famous blue area on the Earth located on the island of Sardinia in the Mediterranean sea, which is part of Italy as the Autonomous region of Sardinia. It is home to more than 22 people over 100 years old. The island is dominated by dry subtropical (Mediterranean) climate, the average January temperature is 7-10°C and in July is 24-26°C. Scientists are looking for scientific justification of the phenomenon of life expectancy on the island for decades.

As writes USA Today, according to previously conducted studies, city Seulo in Sardinia, where the largest number and growth of centenarians, removed from the rest of the world has a small gene pool. However, the reason why the genes allow the islanders live so long remains unknown. It is noteworthy that the documented and verified data on centenarians in Seulo appeared in the 19th century.
Other Blue areas of the planet include the Japanese island of Okinawa, whose residents consume a lot of vegetables and little meat, and daily exercise; Ikari island in Greece where is observed the largest percentage of residents older than 90 years; the Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica, the secret of longevity where locals believe the consumption of vegetables and fruit, particularly oranges; the city of Loma Linda, California, USA, which is home to a large community of seventh-day Adventists. They refused cigarettes, alcohol, coffee and fatty foods. What do you think, what factors contribute to longevity? The answer is we’ll wait here!
