August 24, 2018 was seven years since Steve jobs resigned as Apple CEO. Let’s remember how it was.
Problems with health
In August 2011 the state of health of Steve jobs has deteriorated so much that the acting General Director was no longer possible. Discussing it with family, Steve made the difficult decision to leave the post of head of the company.
Instead of urgently convene a Board of Directors, jobs decided to announce his intention to resign on one of the regular meetings. Despite the fact that Steve was in need of wheelchair, he insisted to attend in person. Before you read our letter, he asked everyone except the Board of Directors to leave the meeting.
That’s what was in that message:
I have always said that someday the day will come when I can no longer perform my duties and meet your expectations as Apple CEO. I said that I’ll be the first to tell you about it. Unfortunately, that day has come.
In this letter, I resign from the post of Apple CEO. If the leadership deems it possible, I would like to continue as Chairman of the Board and Apple employee.
As for redeployment, I strongly recommend that you implement our plan and to appoint the General Director of Apple Tim cook.
I believe that the brightest and most innovative days of Apple are ahead. And I hope that will be able to monitor the success of the company and to encourage him in his new role.
I have gained many friends while working for Apple, and I thank you all for the years of joint work.
The Board of Directors accepted the resignation of Steve jobs and appointed Tim cook the new CEO of the company. Steve, in turn, has led the Board of Directors, and adopted important strategic decisions, until his retirement on 5 October 2011.
