Company SpaceX intends to create a globally available Internet in the framework of the project Starlink, moving into orbit of 12,000 satellites. In may was held the launch of the first sixty satellites, however, the mission was postponed twice: first because of the strong wind, and then — because of the need for equipment checks. Finally, after a week since the beginning of a series of problems, the company successfully launched a dozen satellites launch took place from Cape Canaveral may 24 at 5:30 am Moscow time.
As mentioned earlier, to run used booster Falcon 9, into which was loaded from 60 satellites. Each of them weighs 227 kilograms, their total mass amounted to 13.6 tonnes. When you consider other weight-of the Falcon 9 rocket had to lift in the air mass, equal to 18,5 tons — a record for the rockets SpaceX.
The rocket delivered the satellites to a height of 440 kilometers, but they will work on the 550-km altitude, reaching it with the help of its engines. It is noteworthy that the devices have limited functionality — they can move and contact with the Earth, but to exchange information with each other until they can’t. Probably, it will be capable satellites that go into orbit in the near future.
