Last week, Huawei has done what from it nobody waited – she presented a universal operating system HarmonyOS. The announcement of the new platform was a surprise for two reasons. First, about a month ago, the Chairman of the company said that it is not intended for commercial use. And, secondly, Donald trump confirmed that he is ready to remove with Huawei all the sanctions and once again allow it to use Android and Google services. But the Chinese proved to be more discerning than we thought, and took a step ahead of the curve. Understand than HarmonyOS different from the Android and what makes it better or worse than her.
Despite the minimal information about HarmonyOS, we were able to do some research and now we’re sharing it with you.
A custom kernel
The fundamental difference between HarmonyOS from Android is that the new OS not based on Linux kernel. For your platform Huawei has developed its own microkernel, the software code that is approximately a thousand times less kernel code underlying the Android. This allowed the Chinese to make the OS more flexible adjusting to different types of devices. HarmonyOS therefore, it is logical to compare with FuchsiaOS, which is based on the core of Zircon and also able to work on the gadgets from different segments.
HarmonyOS not a competitor to Android
At least not yet. Despite the fact that HarmonyOS can run on smartphones, on tablets and even on computers at first, Huawei decided to release HarmonyOS only for devices of the category “smart house”. The smartphone version of the operating system will be released in the next few years. If you believe Richard Yu, Chairman of Huawei Devices, it’ll happen closer to 2022. Most likely, the company plans to more thoroughly prepare for the release, for example, organizing their own application directory.
HarmonyOS faster than Android
The core, which is the basis HarmonyOS, supports Deterministic Latency Engine, which allows the operating system to perform multiple processes, analyze current and future load on the hardware and predict the method of its distribution. Eventually this led to more efficient use of hardware devices with about 25 percent response rate.
HarmonyOS safer than Android
Unlike Android, HarmonyOS will not support rooted. In fact, this term is generally not applicable to the operating system of Huawei. This should lead to a higher level of security the operating system from external attacks and malicious software.
Support Android apps
Use a custom kernel has not prevented Huawei add to HarmonyOS support for applications originally written for Android. Though not very clear how to install them, because compatible application directory for HarmonyOS yet. On the other hand, due to the lack of a smartphone operating system this issue is not so relevant and is likely to be decided closer to the date of full release of the mobile OS build.
