The pilot of the Russian Lunokhod missions “Luna-29” can be a humanoid robot

The pilot of the lunar Rover automatic interplanetary station “Luna-29”, which would go to a satellite of our planet in 2028, can become a humanoid robot. That he planned to entrust the management of a car weighing 1.3 tons, the news Agency “RIA Novosti” with reference to anonymous source in the Russian space industry. It would be for the robot – the source did not elaborate. But probably we are talking about promising anthropomorphic robot PENI (Final Experimental Demonstration Object Research), development of which involved the NGO “Android technology” and the Foundation for advanced studies in behalf of the EMERCOM of Russia. In April of this year, the car was transferred to Roskosmos.

Earlier, it was reported on the road map of “Roscosmos” with regards to the moon until the 2030-ies. Near the moon’s South pole is supposed the landing of automatic interplanetary stations “Luna-25” and “Moon-27”, study of surface unconsolidated layer of lunar soil (regolith) instrument station “Luna-26”, with subsequent delivery of the samples to the Earth forces station “Luna 28”.

The launch of the station “Moon-29” from Vostochny is scheduled for 2028. To the Earth the device will deliver the carrier rocket “Angara-А5В”. The source reports that the idea to use the robot as a pilot Rover appeared just recently. In the framework of further manned missions to the satellite similar machines will be to manage the astronauts. In the Russian space Agency this information does not comment.

Development of anthropomorphic robot FEDOR started in 2014, and the General public the car was presented about two years ago. Interestingly, in the Russian Internet community development of the Russian robotics and, in particular, its ability to do the splits and push-UPS was perceived very ambiguous. But the Western media appreciated the vehicle’s ability to shoot “on-Makedonski”, drive a car and ATV offline using machine vision.

FEDOR is able to work in the avatar — repeat the movements of the operator in a special exoskeleton. Quality control provides the touch screen and force feedback. It also gives the effect of “presence” in the robot’s workspace.

Earlier, the head of Roscosmos, Dmitry Rogozin, said that the car can be used including in space, in the framework of manned missions. Roscosmos were going back in March to start training FEDOR’a flight to the International space station (ISS). Sent aboard the unmanned spacecraft “Soyuz” is planned for August this year.
