Year after year, a Tuesday in late October, Apple upgraded model of professional laptops. This time the reason for the upgrade was obvious: Intel Core 2. Wednesday, 18 October 2006, Apple reported to the public about the results of the fourth fiscal quarter (third calendar). Record sales of Macs (1 million 610 thousand) and iPods (8 million 729 thousand). Record revenue and profit. Despite the difficult changes in computer architecture.
In addition, Steve has hinted at something radically new and extremely important to the company in 2007.
A little less than a week later, on 24 October, Apple updated its MacBook Pro lineup. As expected, they were on Intel Core 2 Duo, in the same buildings with the same screens. And even claimed in the press release of the productivity growth of 39 per cent – also.
Such predictable company! Only exist for Apple Computer, which learned to predict with remarkable accuracy (almost always) remained only two months and two weeks.
Don’t believe? This time I do not tell…
This is the fourth part of a series about the MacBook Pro, the previous part of the series here:
The first part: The second Intel Mac;
Second part: MacBook Pro: debut;
Third part: April 2006: MacBook Pro 17” and “school of the young fighter”.
Parts list series about the PowerBook G4 here.
The second generation of Intel laptops from Apple
Two models, with the traditional MacBook Pro screen sizes diagonal is 15.4 and 17 inch (39,1, and 43.2 cm).
ID 15-inch model MacBookPro2,2, 17-inch – MacBookPro2,1.
No mistake, it is so. Apologists of the conspiracy theory trying to find some sort of hidden meaning (signal reptilians?), but I found nothing. Definitely a conspiracy! Or an accident.
As predicted by observers, in both models, we used Intel Core 2 Duo (T7xxx) with 4 MB cache second level and with the same clock speeds as previous models. The same clock frequency of the front system bus (667 MHz), same ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 with different amount of video memory included in the 16-line PCI Express.
All variants of both models are now equipped with the DL SuperDrive and all (not just the largest model) supported Firewire 800.
Type of RAM – the same as the first MacBook Pro Intel: PC2-5300 DDR2 SDRAM (667 MHz). In all variants of all models – 2 slot. Apple limited the amount of RAM 3 Gigabytes (in the online store, you could install 2 chip in 1 Gigabyte or chips in 1 and 2 Gigabytes. When you install a larger volume Mac OS X “see” only 2 Gigabytes – although the tests proved that in third party programs extra Gigabytes of “work” and increase their productivity.
Gigabit Ethernet (10/100/1000Base-T), c Serial ATA 1.5 GB/s, built-in AirPort Express and Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR. AirPort Express supported 802/11 n “after upgrade firmware.”
Of course, the SMS (Sudden Motion Sensor, fall detector – leading the heads of hard discs in a safe position when a suspicious sharp accelerations), ALS (Ambient Light Sensor, the light sensor control the screen brightness and backlit keys), and everything else that made notebooks from Apple special, even when they lagged behind the competition in performance (despite this, in 2005 the share of Apple in the notebook market has increased from 6% to 12%).
EFI – 32-bit. Because of this, the maximum OS version is 10.7.5, although using third-party software (sacrificing sound support), like, for these MacBook Pro can be installed even El Capitan (10.11).
I have not tried, and we know it did not work. So do not presume to assert.
One of the side results of the transition to Intel: support Windows. Using Boot Camp (which still existed in the form of a publicly available beta, and was “not for everyone”), or Parallels.
When you use Boot Camp to run alternative operating system required restarting the computer. Parallels provided a parallel operation of both systems.
The 15-inch model was offered in 2 versions, differing in modification and clock speed Intel Core 2 Duo.
Between the variants had much in common.
The base package of all variants of the model 15-inch models contain a hard drive capacity of 120 GB (5 400 rpm), and was offered for an additional fee, same options: the drive capacity of 160 GB (5 400 rpm) and 200 Gigabytes (4 200 rpm).
The optical disc drive in all variants of the model were specified as 6x DL SuperDrive (DVD+R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW). Referred to Apple ratio usually refers to the most “advanced” of all activities, who is able to drive – but not this time. 6x is the speed read DVD-ROM DL.
The extension of the screen – 1440h900, supported by the smaller resolution (16:10 and 4:3).
The external display support resolution up to 2560×1600 in all modes.
In the variant with Intel Core 2 Duo 2.16 GHz (T7400), 1 999 dollars in the base set includes 1 Gigabyte of RAM video memory 128 MB GDDR3 SDRAM (without the possibility to upgrade, at least officially).
Geekbench 2 scored in the 32-bit tests, 2774, and 64-bit – 3130 points.
The option is more expensive (2 for $ 499), Intel Core 2 Duo 2.33 GHz (T7600), the basic kit was 2 Gigabytes, which occupied both slots. On purpose if it was made (so the client installed 3 Gigabytes when buying a computer), or “the way out” – I don’t know.
Video memory size – 256 MB GDDR3 SDRAM.
Geekbench 2 scored in the 32-bit tests, 2969, and in 64-bit 3345 points.
That is, the productivity growth is there, but it is not 39%.
The only version of the model, with Intel Core 2 Duo 2.33 GHz (T7600), cost 2 799 dollars. For the money the client has gained 2 gigabytes of RAM, disk capacity of 160 GB (5 400 rpm), and 256 MB of VRAM (GDDR3 SDRAM).
Instead of the standard disk in our online shop you can choose to either drive 100 GB 7 200 rpm or the disk 200 GB 4 200 R/min. that is, The “bigger but slower” or “less but faster”.
The optical disc drive in all variants of the model were specified as 8x DL SuperDrive (DVD+R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW). Referred to Apple ratio usually refers to the most “advanced” of all activities, who is able to drive – but not this time. 8x is the speed read DVD-ROM DL.
But apparently, all these multiplicities are interesting only “maniacs”, decrypt them won’t.
Geekbench 2 scored in the 32-bit tests, 2950, 64-bit – 3339 points.
