A new discovery by researchers from Yale University may significantly reduce the number of suicides. Usually, to detect human tendency to suicide is extremely difficult, but thanks to discovered a biological basis, this can be done using positron emission tomography. To a greater extent the method is effective with patients diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder. If you experience suicidal thoughts in their minds occur pronounced changes.
Stress disorder is a consequence of experienced person injuring the psyche of the situation. Early studies have shown that to a greater extent inclined to her military and, strangely enough, workers of prisons. Scientists have known that for many mental disorders in the human brain occurs the increased availability of the receptor mGluR5, the researchers from Yale University decided to test — are there any changes in his work with suicidal thoughts.
To find out, they spent through the imaging of the 87 volunteers: they were divided into groups according to 29 people, among whom were patients with stress disorder, with depression and healthy people. The number of mGluR5 was calculated in five brain regions: in a couple of parts of the prefrontal cortex, orbitofrontal cortex, amygdala and hippocampus.
As expected, the number of the above-mentioned receptor varies greatly depending on the mental state of the people. In patients with stress disorder receptors are highlighted in greater availability, and in the presence of suicidal thoughts they are really larger than in their absence.
Scientists are unable to explain the relationship between the number of receptors and the presence of suicidal thoughts, but they believe that this is a clear biological marker, which is able to save many lives. Based on this knowledge, scientists can develop drugs that act on this group of receptors and relieve the people from suicidal tendencies.
