According to the Australian analytical center Breakthrough, global warming could wipe out humanity by the beginning of 2050. Some conservationists firmly believe that slow the rate of increase of temperature in the world is possible with the landing of several million trees. This idea, for example, supports American blogger Jimmy Donaldson, and his project of planting six million trees was even supported by Elon Musk. Only here the landing of such a number of vegetation can we only hurt, because the trees emit a lot of nitrous oxide. In this, at least, are sure of Finnish scientists from the University of Helsinki.
The results of the scientific work conducted under the auspices of Dr. Catherine Macakova, was published in Nature Communications. Previously, most scientists were convinced that trees are actively involved in reducing the concentration of carbon dioxide in the air. Because of this, few people could even imagine that plants can also be sources of greenhouse gases such as nitrous oxide. The suggestion was put only in 1998, the researchers found that the formed due to the activity of bacteria nitrous oxide may be emitted into the earth’s atmosphere. And the greenhouse activity of this chemical compound, incidentally, is 298 times higher than carbon dioxide.
Why do trees need nitrogen?
Nitrogen is essential for proper growth of plants gas. Almost all the trees remove it from the soil, together with other necessary for their living organic matter. The majority of nitrogen eventually returns to the soil with fallen leaves and pine needles is transformed into nitrous and goes into the Earth’s atmosphere. Accumulate in the upper layers, gas intensifies the greenhouse effect, which gradually increases the temperature of our planet.

Using research station SMEAR II, the scientists found that the source of nitrous oxide is not only the soil but the trees themselves. In particular, we are talking about plants of the Northern forest and taiga, where there is a great quantity of firs, pines and birches. Especially a lot of nitrous oxide is released during the vegetation period of the plants, i.e. during the time when they grow and develop. In winter, the amount of emissions reduced sharply and the trees even start to absorb greenhouse gases, but this does not diminish their harmful emissions still more.
According to scientists, in the short term nitrous oxide emissions from trees can lead to climate changes in Northern Europe and Asia, including the taiga. The fact that in these regions of the planet there is a great number of coniferous trees, from which comes the maximum emission of nitrous oxide. To find out more precisely how greenhouse gases from trees affect the climate, scientists need to conduct more research.
