Uber will deliver food with the help of flying drones

During the event the Elevate Summit company Uber announced plans this year to start full trials of a delivery service using unmanned aerial vehicles in the framework of its project Uber Eats. Recently, the Federal aviation administration (FAA) gave Uber permission to test delivery in San Diego, California. As the portal Tech Crunch, the first such test was already performed by the company in partnership with McDonald’s last year. Now Uber is going to run more extensive testing this delivery option is fast food, with the participation of different cafes and restaurants.

“We are working closely with the FAA to ensure that we fully comply with safety requirements. Our goal is to empower our service Uber Eats and provide more choices to our customers literally with the click of a button. The partnership with networks of restaurants and cafes, as well as our aeronautical and technological expertise of our project Uber Elevate will cope with this task”, — commented the project Manager of Uber Elevate Luke Fisher.

How drones will deliver the food?

It is noted that Uber is focused on the delivery of fast food in a very dense urban environment so it is not going to send drones with food directly to the doors of customers. Instead, managed cloud technology or Cloud System of the UAV will be sent with orders in special points, where they will be collected by couriers and Uber Eats to take to the customer.

The company is also considering the option where the landing points will be used the roofs of cars Uber, fitted with a special QR-code and parked near the destination of the order. After landing the drone driver of the company will be able to provide further service to the destination.

Why delivery drones flying best?

“We are not here to deliver food via drones directly to your door customers. We will use them to shorten delivery time,” says Fisher.

Uber noted that the use of drones will make delivery faster and cheaper. If shipping ground takes 21 minutes, the delivery by air will take only 7 minutes.

According to Bloomberg, the unit Eats was very profitable for Uber. In 2018 Uber Eats received an income of $ 1.5 billion, almost 2.5 times higher than the result of 2017. According to Tech Crunch, the first quarter of 2019 brought the company revenue growth of 105 percent and amounted to 3,07 billion dollars.

I should add that just last week, Amazon announced similar plans for the delivery of goods by drones. The appropriate service within the program Prime Air, the company is going to launch in the coming months.

A day earlier we reported about how will look like the air ports for the flying taxi company Uber, the first of which is planned to open in 2023.
