What is “revolutionary” and “scary” technology of Huawei GPU Turbo and what effect it gives in real games

Another month and a half ago, Huawei introduced a “revolutionary” and “scary” (as she was called by the company) the GPU Turbo. She allegedly spent billions of dollars and a few years of development.

Unfortunately, all we said is that the GPU Turbo boosts GPU performance in games by up to 60% while reducing power consumption by up to 30%. Despite the fact that it’s been a lot of time, a clear test at least in English, I had not previously found. Those that were in Chinese or Hindi, was not accompanied with normal text and screenshots below to understand something. Let’s begin with, what is the GPU Turbo and how does this supposedly revolutionary technology.

In total, Huawei has transformed the graphics driver, so that more effective use of resources CPU and GPU. If we are talking about productivity, this is achieved in the following way.

In games very often, the next frame contains basically the same information as the previous one. Think about it, fps per second on average 25-60 and above. In that one second you have a system renders a few dozen frames. Of course, even in a fairly active game, most of the information that must be rendered, will be identical to that already illustrated in the previous frame. The essence of the tests is simple. Took smartphones Huawei firmware without a GPU Turbo, tested, updated firmware with GPU Turbo, tested again and compared. Minus only in the fact that clearly compared only PUBG. Yes, it is now one of the most popular mobile games, but we all know that sometimes the results are very dependent on optimization of the game itself, and not from a iron.

After upgrading from Turbo GPU stability indicator rose to 96%! FPS almost rode, constantly on the level of 31-32 fps. Freezes almost disappeared. That is, the increase in framerate was fine, but he was conditionally three times more stable. I don’t know how it would be in another game where FPS is initially stable, but, apparently, in such cases, as with PUBG, GPU Turbo directs efforts on stabilization. In the end, why do you need 60 fps on your phone?

As for power consumption with GPU Turbo phone in the game is running at about 10-12% longer. It’s not 30%, but too bad.

The tests were run on smartphones with Kirin 970, which is generally very powerful. But GPU Turbo will appear on many other Huawei devices, including not even the new budget Honor 6X. And I’d be very interested to compare how the technology will show itself where platform performance is really lacking.

In the meantime, we have the fact that the technology works, it gives a tangible and real effect, it is free and will appear on all relevant and not-so smartphones Huawei Honor in a few months. I have no reason to judge, whether the technology is $ 10 billion, as claimed by the company, also it is difficult to say whether it is really market. But if the same Kirin 659 GPU Turbo will turn into quite a good gaming platform, it would be very cool. Another issue is that the performance of platforms grows every year, but the game, which would have required real power, can be counted on the fingers of one hand.
