What will the MacBook Pro be like if you put Apple Silicon

in it

Something extraordinary is happening around the next generation of Apple Pro notebooks. Details (very plausible) about household laptops ( MacBook Air or MacBook, or both) are heard by everyone. And nothing about the MacBook Pro. They are mentioned, they are even prophesied for the role of the first Mac with Apple Silicon , only about what they simply have to intrigue and interest us – not a word. You can talk about Apple Silicon inside, amazing performance and other platitudes, but how will they hook the public? Will they bring back the professionals who left the PC? Around the "apple-silicone" MacBook Pros there is a deafening silence. Translated from apple to human – "something is being prepared in this direction."

Spoiler – won't overheat for sure

The last apple revolution in professional laptops happened in 2016, it was Phil Schiller's finest hour and the best presentation in his entire career. Touch Bar ( extreme, swallowing Escape and On / Off / Touch ID key), a unique keyboard with a mechanism developed by Apple, an even thinner body than before. And on stage, everything sounded like a fantastic melody of heavenly spheres, almost like in the days of Steve Jobs.

MacBook Pro problems

But a good fairy tale turned into a nightmare. Migration to other laptops of those who could do without macOS, which seemed even more massive than it actually was – those leaving did not deny themselves the pleasure of slamming the door louder. They were driven by pain and frustration. They were convinced that Apple had betrayed them. Either for some higher strategic reasons, or having forgotten how to make the world's best portable computers.

Особенно доставалось системе вентиляции и защитной реакции процессоров на перегрев – они притормаживали, снижая тактовую частоту и, соответственно, производительность.

But ordinary "household" users in our Telegram chat with them felt comfortable, the "Pro" prefix at the end of their name raised their self-esteem – they were willingly taken. Until now, many of them are not aware of any problems. But the time for change is at hand.

New MacBook Pro with Apple Silicon

The update will affect two MacBook Pro models at once

Presenting them to the public (14-inch and 16-inch versions), most likely virtually (in video) will be Apple's new senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing Greg Josvyak. Everything will not be the same now. Externally, the MacBook Pro will change slightly. The bezels around the screens will become thinner. As, apparently, the corps of new "professionals".

As before, there will be four Thunderbolt 4 (USB4) connectors on the case. 3.5 mm jack for wired headphones is questionable. The 2 Thunderbolt option is unlikely. Wireless communications are top notch. Wi-Fi 6 and even 5G (apparently for a fee, 150 dollars). Mini-LED displays.

But for a professional laptop, another aspect is much more important – they must cope with serious overloads without throwing out the white flag or even slowing down. It is not known what letters the modification of Apple A14 used in them will denote, but its performance should amaze and shock. Otherwise, the transition to Apple Silicon will be compromised and it will be very difficult to return to the public the expectation of an inevitable miracle (which raised the company's market capitalization to mind-blowing heights) after such an embarrassment. The Apple Silicone MBPs will be passionately tested against Apple's promises by those who have the apple silicon dream down their throats.

How Apple Solves MacBook Overheating Problem

Apple has a very strong team of specialists in cooling the internals of the computer to a comfortable temperature for the processor. They did not manage to defeat the feverish heat of Intel processors, but even the Apple A14 cores overclocked to the maximum clock speeds, if they did not lie to us, should not emit too much heat.

Under the hood there will be a special version of the A14

Moreover, even the 14-inch version should be uncompromisingly fast and durable. These laptops, in the words of someone who probably knows more about them than we do, are "portable iMac Pros." With very limited upgrades. But we have been prepared for this since 2012, we are ready.

The Apple Revolution cannot do without surprises. For example, the likelihood of display support for Apple-Silicone MacBook Pro touch-interface is great. iPads have learned to work with trackpads, so why not teach laptops to recognize when you touch their screens? Those who have spent a lot of time on the iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard reflexively try to explain something to the laptop with the touch of their fingers. The second surprise, which would not have happened well, is the return of the keyboard with the "butterfly" mechanism , even if all its problems were overcome. I would not want to – but they have the right to do so.

And about Thunderbolt : there is hope for its faster (than expected) appearance on Macs with Apple Silicon.

Will Thunderbolt in Mac with Apple Silicon

On July 8 of this year, Intel released official information on the Thunderbolt 4 protocol and announced the start of production of the 8000-series Thunderbolt controllers, designed for devices with other processors (not Intel) inside. The fourth version of Thunderbolt, about which so much has already been written, was lit up in January 2020 at the consumer electronics show in Las Vegas, not really through an oversight of Intel's management, or intentionally – during the presentation of 10nm processors on the 11th generation Tiger Lake.

In my opinion, Thunderbolt 4 interested journalists even more than the 11th generation – journalists asked Intel more questions about this protocol than about Tiger Lake. But all this was not entirely official. On July 8th, Thunderbolt 4 was announced in earnest.

The MacBook with Apple Silicon will still have an Intel chip. Like this

The protocol and the controllers supporting it were supposed to appear on the market after Tiger Lake, no earlier than mid-2021 (and in January 2020, only the PRC special services knew about the coronavirus). According to analysts and unofficial figures, now everything must change. The 8000-series controllers are designed to work with non-Intel processors – for example, ARM processors (and with Apple Silicon), this is a quote from an Intel press release. Thunderbolt is not an option for Apple professional laptops .

MacBook Pro with Apple Silicon still can't do without Intel chips inside. The 8000th controllers will be available to OEM consumers only after the official announcement of the release of Tiger Lake, it is scheduled for September 2 this year.
