How Apple is killing the file system, citing the words of Steve jobs, written various publications. Even such prestigious as the Los Angeles Times. Though Apple has long felt towards the victim hostility, and wanted to kill her… these words of Steve jobs: “We have long dreamed to get the user’s file system, and now we did it.” Read, if you don’t understand why I brought them.
Even if you don’t have any relation to the investigating authorities, and not read over his life, no detective, you’ve probably noticed some of the details. If you don’t mind, the victim of this murder I will refer to the initials. F. S., that is, “File System”.
Steve really came out that Apple wanted “to remove the F. S. out of the way”, but not from his way, and out of the way of the user. In the story there is another character, but to denote his initials, we will not – despite its importance to the creators of the programs and computers for their execution, as they did not call. Including the letter P.
Steve is clearly and accurately expressed his thought. Without metaphor. He spent a whole semester studying poetry and Eastern philosophy, one of the most prestigious and expensive universities in the United States and often resorted to parables, but this time he definitely and clearly said what was true.
And she, F. S., by the way, almost ten years after her murder, alive and more or less healthy, macOS, iOS, and even in other xxxOS…
This is a continuation of a series about WWDC 2011, previous parts here:
First part: WWDC 2011: Apple takes to the clouds.
Among iOS users, for many years, it was common to think that it there is no file system. There are only programs, messages, and pictures, there is some mysterious sandbox, which is somehow related to the security of the data – but no files, directories (or folders) no.
And accordingly, there is no file system. Where is she? Show!
Because “trampoline” (a program that draws on the screen app icons, folders, or other entity of the iOS interface, called SpingBoard, she is invisible) there is only a program.
Draft system without a system (a file) from time to time arise in the space of the Internet, but they all either outright nonsense or allegory: the file system they still assumed, but carefully insulated from it.
And the system itself, programs, pictures, texts, videos and everything are files. Folders nested one inside the other, streamline them, to get user extra.
That in prehistoric times the file system had, and it was a nightmare. The file system was getting rid of it, just as civilization has saved us from running on full of predators and snakes in the jungle in search of Breakfast. This healthy lifestyle has resulted in a limited duration of 30 years. Would you like to go back there?
File system in iOS is. Same as in OS X, where most of it is also hidden from the average user, for his own good.
In iOS all files and directories hidden from the user. In later versions there was a program Files, because it does no file was… even worse than them. Where are the files there and the file system.
What does iCloud?
They (Apple) did to clean up the file system path of the user? In OS X Lion in this great deliverance was not only iCloud.
Launchpad was one of the most effective means of deliverance. In conjunction with the Mac App Store, he took over the care of all cycle of life of the app, from acquisition to death (deletion), including discovery, launch and updates. This is an analogue of not less than close chords SpingBoard and App Store in iOS.
But Launchpad Mac App Store simplifies the use of programs, but in OS X, horror of horrors, there are just files: contacts, messages, email, pictures, videos, Word documents, or Numbers.
To iCloud all (most) implementations of cloud technologies the cloud was just another “disc”, located somewhere beyond the tangible world. iCloud also stores the data somewhere, on one of the server farms Apple (today there are dozens, in different countries of the world).
Almost all of iOS apps (and many apps for OS X) before the iCloud already used, in fact, cloud computing is shifting to the server part of the task, saving important data, using a server for coordination.
The main thing in iCloud was the technology of synchronizing data between devices of the same user, automatic and nothing (except the login) does not require the user. Not all of the data, and some data serve specific applications.
The e-mail (for accounts “@me.com”), contacts purchased from the iTunes, iBook or App Store applications, documents, iWorks (Pages, Numbers and Keynote), and some other data immediately (usually) instantly appeared on all connected account devices.
Without settings and without mastering anything with ease. Some of them are even free, others, while the amount “paid” data did not exceed 5 Gigabytes, also free of charge.
Over time, there is the possibility of increasing the available space for an annual fee (small).
To connect to used iCloud Apple ID the ID that is tied to your email address, it was easy to get yourself a alternative storage in quantities limited only by the number of e-mail addresses (at least a billion!). It is less convenient, magic becomes less, but the Gigabytes on the cloud can be more at times.
Computers ceased to be the main digital life (according to Apple), and weaker fit for the role of “digital hub”. That is, the center of digital life.
iCloud is a cloud – based digital hub, which is not necessary to connect the device which is available everywhere where there is access to the world wide web, who knows all about the programs and user data.
It’s a lot, but that’s all. Paranoid thoughts about the control Apple for all users of Mac OS and iOS paranoid.
